This contract has been updated!
This particular contract has been used after each group has decided on a novel they would like to read together. The members work as a group to come up with the best way to move forward with their book club reading assignments. You will notice that the meetings are chunked by the number of chapters each student must read before they meet. I hint towards the group what is a manageable amount of chapters in the given time and leave it up to them as readers to agree on the amount.
The assignments and mini lessons you would like to do between meetings are up to you! This contract gives each student an overall layout of the amount of readings they are responsible for each meeting. Like any given contract, this is a living document that can be adjusted as the book club progresses. This gives ownership to the reader.
This Book Club Contract is an organizational tool to help students stay organized with their readings. In addition, the contract holds students accountable. I have to remind students less and less what readings they must accomplish because their group members do that for them! I usually pair this contract with a calendar that has the meeting dates preplanned so that students can have a list and a visual to when each meeting will occur and the reading selection being discussed on that date.
