This resources lays out a schedule, and roles for students in a book club. It is meant to be used for students who are all reading the same book, and can be used weekly as apart of your Language Arts program, or Literacy program. I separate the kids into their reading levels when I do my Book Clubs.
The student roles include:
1. Discussion Director x 2 – Asks questions to lead discussion and increase comprehension; asks who, what, where, why when, how and what if?
2. Vocabulary Enricher – using dictionaries and thesauruses clarifies word meanings and pronunciations; discusses words in the text that are unusual, interesting, or difficult to understand. During discussion time you will share these words and what page they were found on.
4. Checker x2 – checks for completion of assignments; evaluates participation and helps to monitor discussion for equal participation.
6. Capable Connector – finds connections between the reading material and something outside the text, such as a personal experience, a topic studies in another class, or a different work of literature.
There are guiding questions for discussions, graphic organizers for the checkers to use, graphic organizer for the vocabulary enricher, as well as the capable connector.
