“Book Club” is my version of Harvey Daniel’s Literature Circles. This resource works for ANY NOVEL and will become a lifelong tool that you can use multiple times each school year. This "Ready to Print" Curriculum Guide Meets THIRTEEN of the CCSS in Reading Literature, Language, and Speaking/Listening for Upper Elementary Students in Grades 3-5 and can work seamlessly with Guided Reading Groups as well!
How It Works:
I choose sets of novels in a variety of reading levels (to allow for differentiation while still uniting the entire class through a common theme--Book Lists Included!) that share a common theme or author and assign independent and group activities that allow me to assess student understanding of Common Core State Standards in Reading Literature—every single one of them to be exact! Small groups of students read the same text and complete activities independently four days of the week in preparation for group work during one weekly “Meeting.”
Independent Activities are divided into four parts each taking one week to complete:
• Hello My Name Is (Week One)
• I Spy with my Little Eye (Week Two)
• Word Nerd Alert (Week Three)
• Later, Gator (Week Four)
These questions and activities cover plot, character traits with evidence from the text, close reading, visualization, vocabulary development, figurative language, author’s purpose, and extension beyond the text. Part Four includes a “Think-Tac-Know” Project Menu of activities for students to complete after the book’s completion covering sequence, compare & contrast, moral/message, retelling, point of view, fluency, & more!
Once a week, students sharing the same text come together for "Meetings" where they complete a group task. I have included the following Group Tasks:
• Pre-Meeting Planning
• Book Club Week #1
• Book Club Week #2
• Book Club Week #3
• Book Club Week #4
These group tasks cover pre-meeting planning, character traits, character feelings/motivations/actions, poetry, key events, and comparing/contrasting texts in a series. With your purchase, you will receive photographs of actual student work to see how I envision these group activities being used.
Procedures & Assessments:
On the front of each student packet is a list of steps for students to follow. Additionally on the front page of the packet is a rubric for teacher assessment that can be completed week-to-week or all at once at the end. I have also included a sample pacing calendar that includes a timeline for independent and group work.
