I am so happy to share this packet for anyone interested in starting a book club in their class. This book club is special because, it’s not only for students…but for their parents too!
This packet is focused on the chapter book A to Z Mysteries: The Jaguar’s Jewel. Each child in your class will need a copy of the book to take home. The expectation is for this book to bring together the family for the purpose of reading and building family literacy. This should be a fun and special time for parents and students to enjoy reading and to create memories. The intention is for the children and their parents to read together. All reading should be done at home, not to be done in class during the school day.
I sent home a folder for each child with the book and a tentative schedule and recommended timeline for reading each chapter. This is recommended and encouraged to stay on track. Isn’t it a fun thought, that each family will be reading the same book at the same time?!
I also included some reading tips and questioning ideas and stems to help guide the reading discussion parents should have with their child. Remember, it’s important to remind parents that the child is not only reading fluently and with expression, but he/she is understanding as well!
After a few weeks with the book, I invited the participating families into my classroom for a book club night. We enjoyed drinks and cookies, conversations about the chapters we read so far, and quality time with our classroom family. I demonstrated how to incorporate academic language and vocabulary into conversations about books, how to help parents engage their child while reading, questioning games and activities, and we created a “Make and Take” item (comprehension die) for parents to use while reading the rest of the chapters and other books, with their child at home.
The purpose of this night is to help connect reading at home to what is happening in the classroom. If we all have a common language when it comes to reading, it will help deepen children’s understanding along with making reading meaningful, memorable, valuable and fun!
I sincerely hope you use this product and make this an opportunity to help show your students and their families how amazing, powerful and vital reading and literacy is. Make up an invitation and send that home in the folder to invite your students and their families to the book club for a memorable night.
