Independent reading and book clubs present great opportunities for students to read at their level or instructional level. However, how do we know they are really reading? How do we hold them accountable? Teachers are always busy with small groups and working 1:1 as they confer. We have to trust they are really reading and that they are really understanding their work. This wasn’t enough for me. I began to use these journals for independent and book club reading. I saw great growth and I was able to really tell if they were understanding. I collected them each week in a different order and unannounced. There are many different pages with various levels of questions. Just choose the questions, print, and staple. See them grow and your data become more accurate!
