These differentiated book club or literature circle templates can be used to promote rich and deep discussion for any book, play or poetry. My mixed-ability class - including EAL / ESL students - told me they enjoyed completing the varied activities, and it clearly lead to rich and deep discussions for all. These templates allowed my students to be successful, regardless of their language level. A colleague in another school also used the templates with his students, with resounding success. After several rounds, I have revised and refined the templates based on my observations and students' feedback. They are solid. All you need to do is print and go!
I'm a believer in cooperative learning so I don't ask students to rotate roles or focus on just one skill each reading session. Instead, I want students to have multiple opportunities to practice their skills, learn from each other and, as a result, refine their approaches. To this end, these rigorous templates incorporate various levels of Bloom's Taxonomy to ensure each and every student has an achievable challenge they can build on through the discussions.
I also aim to promote learner autonomy and metacognition in my classroom, so you will see these elements in my materials.
Students told me that once they were 'in the swing' it took them around 20 minutes to complete the template after reading, so it is definitely not onerous. Some EAL / ESL students said it took them longer, but that is to be expected; they also added that the tasks themselves were enjoyable so they didn't mind doing them. My students were genuinely excited to come to class each day and start their discussions. The way I saw them support each other's reading and enhance their understanding - all independently of me - convinced me how worthwhile these templates are.
