Thank you for purchasing my book club! I prepare students for book club throughout the whole year by doing full-class novel studies, book buddies, and Reader’s Workshop. It is in the last month or so of third grade that I feel they are truly ready to take the reins on a book club. However, if you teach older students, or have a particularly independent class, you might feel that they are ready for this activity earlier on in the year.
Each day, students meet to discuss what they have read the night before for homework. During this discussion, each person presents a page based on the “job” he/she had the previous night. Each person in the group gets 3-5 minutes to share—the other students listen and ask questions of that presenter. Then, the group spends about 10 minutes figuring out which pages they will read for homework and who will do what job. I have them fill in the chart on the first page of their packet, so no one can say they “forgot” what their assignment was. The book club pages that follow will allow students to use the same packet for two school weeks. However, you can modify the packet any way you would like to make this assignment last for as little or as long as needed.
