Product Description

All of the activities included in this download are designed to compliment the book My Garden, by Kevin Henkes. Help students enhance vocabulary, sight words, writing skills, and word work using the following materials!

Activity 1: Garden Beginning Sounds Cookie Tray Sheets (pages 4 – 6)

Have students place magnetic letters in the boxes to represent the beginning sound of each picture.

Activity 2: Garden Word & Picture Puzzle (page 7)

Have students arrange the strips to spell the word garden.

Hint: This would be a great way to model the –AR sound, r influenced a, and lead into the word work activities on pages 30 – 33.

Activity 3: Garden Sentence Building Cards (pages 8 – 15)

Have students arrange the words to create a sentence about what they would plant in their garden. Some words are realistic and some are silly, like in the book, My Garden.

Activity 4: Garden Write the Room (pages 14 – 16)

Have students match the pictures on the cards to the pictures on their recording sheets then write the correct vocabulary word.

Activity 5: Garden Writing Prompt (page 17)

Have students use the vocabulary they learned from the sentence building cards to write their own sentence about what they would plant in their garden. This sheet can also be used as a recording sheet for the sentence building activity.

Activity 6: Spin a Sight Word (page 18)

Have students use a pencil and a paper clip to spin the spinner. Then practice writing the sight word on the game board. Each sight word appears in the sentence building activity or the emergent reader.

Activity 7: My Garden Emergent Reader Mini Book (pages 19 – 24)

Have students practice sight words and garden vocabulary by reading this companion mini book.

Activity 8: My Garden Writing Prompt (pages 25 – 30)

Have students describe their own garden on the writing prompt. Then have students publish their writing in the final draft booklet.

HINT: For less independent students, give each student ONE sentence starter and ONE page of the mini booklet. Then create a class book together, as opposed to each student publishing their own book.

Activity 9: -AR Word Work (pages 31 – 33)

The word GARDEN has an R influence vowel in it, creating the –AR sound. Use pages 31 – 33 to explore words with –AR sounds.

- Spin & Build – Have students spin to get a beginning sound. Then add –

AR and practice reading and writing the word.

- AR Search & Cover Pictures- Students cover up pictures with the –AR sound.

- AR Search & Cover Words – Students cover up words with the –AR sound.
