This Book Fair Breakout was created for primary students. My goals for creating this Breakout were to:
*introduce primary students to elements of Breakouts since they had no previous experience
*incorporate popular areas in the media center into the game to capitalize on their media center prior knowledge to enable success
*include simple, pictorial clues to enable nonreaders to be successful
*build community and team work among primary students
*generate excitement about the upcoming book fair in the media center
*review shopping expectations with students and that they might not have enough money for all books that they desire
As a result of these goals, this Breakout is run more like a scavenger hunt to keep students focused.
This PowerPoint presentation (23 slides) includes all materials that you need to customize the Breakout to your media center. The first 6 slides in the PowerPoint are for you to present the scenario and activity to students. The next 3 slides are directions for how to prepare the materials and the media center for the activity. The remaining 14 slides contain materials, such as clues and hint cards, for you to print and use in the activity. You will need to purchase pretend money, 4 pencil pouches in different colors, 4 key locks, 1 toolbox, and 1 bicycle lock. I purchased all of my items at the Dollar Tree, which brought the total cost of this activity to $11.
I hope that you and your students have fun preparing for the book fair with a Breakout!
