About this resource
✿ Retelling Punch (or Highlight!) Card and Written Retell
Primary/Secondary lines included. Copy for a two-sided written retell.
How I use this in my classroom:
I use partners for the Punch Card retell. Before retelling, students refer to the story elements chart hanging in my classroom. Then, they practice (independently) retelling the story by touching each section of the punch card using it as a reference point. When ready, the student gives the punch card to a partner. As a student retells the story, his or her partner punches or highlights each successful part of the retell. Note: I model this many times before I hand this task over to them. Partners are encouraged to prompt when needed. I often let them choose between written or oral retell. I never do both but like having the option.
✿ Pick-A-Prompt
Primary/Secondary lines included. Copy for two-sided.
How I use this in my classroom:
Again, I model what the final product should look like several times before I encourage students to complete it independently. Have students select and highlight (or put an X on) the chosen prompt. Have extra paper available if needed. If single-sided, you could have them illustrate the finished prompt on back. ART SMART!
NOTE: Many of the story prompts become “Small Moment” stories which we call “One Time” stories. Kids know I expect them to make characters MOVE, TALK, and FEEL, use TRANSITION words, and include a B-M-E. This results in fun, creative stories and my students often share their opinions, as well! It’s always fun to gain insights into their thoughts/beliefs.
✿Make-a-Word
How I use this in my classroom:
Want your kids' phonetic skills to grow by leaps and bounds? Anxious to see if they can APPLY what you've taught them? If you haven't introduced Make-A-Word to your class, give it a try. TRULY AMAZING RESULTS! In the beginning, we make words together. I use Magnetic Letters on board and we manipulate them into words AFTER noticing what digraphs, vowels, the “s” for plurals, etc. we see. Always remind them in the beginning that each word must have a vowel. I sometimes allow them to work together and often have a minute break where kids share out a word they made. I’ll write it on board and students are allowed to “grab” it and add the word to their own paper if desired. It’s a good learning opportunity. It’s March now as I write this and this week my lowest child got 18 words and my highest got over fifty in a twenty-minute period. Great word work!
