This is an easy to use printable for students to use at the beginning of the year when trying to select an independent reading book. Students can add to it throughout the year and keep it in their reader's notebooks. To use: group 4-5 students together with a stack of varied novels. Allow students 3 minutes to read anywhere in the novel. Call stop and the students rate the books from 1-10 and comment about their thoughts. Rotate the books and begin again. Repeat this as many times as you like. It gives students a variety of novels to sample, and they can refer to it when struggling to find an independent novel to read throughout the year. I do this activity twice a year.
