This is a great book project activity for students to complete that focuses on the Common Core Standards of analyzing a character in a text by drawing on specific details in the text to support ideas. You can download the first 3 pages to handout to students which gives step-by-step instructions for this book project. Included are specific details (with models) that needs to be in each paragraph of the essay. Students focus on giving general information about their character, physical descriptions, personality attributes, and any other extra information that makes the character who they are (age, job, family situation, and interesting facts). Also, two pictures are shown and one step-by-step directions given on how students can create their own character sketch poster design. A rubric is attached on each student's handout. I have also included on the last page, two rubrics per page for you to copy and use when grading.
Students love this project. I have used this project with independent novels as well as practicing characterization techniques using a guided reading story with whole class instruction. This is a perfect assessment for you to use to see if students understand characterization.
