Help for all levels of student writers in writing a multi-paragraph novel essay! Three organizers to meet student needs and provide differentiation along with a sample essay, plus a rubric for student/teacher use.
This book report follows an introduction-body-conclusion format, providing three options for a pre-writing organizer outline:
1. Sentence completion frame with examples provides the most structure
2. Fill-in with prompts about the content of the novel with examples
3. Graphic organizer with a completed example and a blank fill-in for more competent students who need less structure.
See the Preview for examples of each organizer.
There are four paragraphs for the body: setting, main character, plot, and theme. A complete sample essay clearly demonstrates how the organization and ideas in the pre-writes are used to develop the sentences and paragraphs in the draft. Margin labels on the sample correspond to the headings in the pre-write. Students are then able to create a pre-writing outline or other type of organizer more independently for the next essay assignment on a different topic with instructional references back to this assignment.
A rubric is provided for teacher evaluation and could be used by students for revising and editing their drafts.
It can be used for book reports on students’ individual extra-curricular reading, for a final independent activity following discussions of books read together in small groups, or a culminating essay project for a class novel.
