I always liked the idea of my students reading an analyzing a book of their choice every quarter, but I wanted some way for them to take more ownership of their final report while also trying different writing styles.
I created this assignment so that students would have four different book reports to do during the course of a year instead of the same thing at the end of every quarter. When I assign it, I allow the students to choose which report to do each quarter and I keep a chart to ensure each students does each report one time. However, this would be easy to use if you finished doing a specific type of writing and wanted to have the entire class focus on applying the writing techniques to a book of their choice.
Included: I have outlined the four paper styles (Argumentative, Comparison, Analysis and Review), provided explicit instructions and examples for students and created four rubrics.
I have aligned each rubric to the Common Core standards, and have ensured that each rubric is the same amount of points so you could have students completing different reports each quarter (as I do) and still accurately/easily put them into the grade book.
