PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I wanted to keep my students accountable for their reading during our Book Club times, but I didn't want them to dread the assignment. I tried book reports, book projects, discussion questions, and journal entires. There was something missing with each thing I tried. Either they didn't cover enough information in the book, or the directions weren't explicit enough for students. I was tired of lackluster results. SO... After months of trial and error, I finally figured out a FUN way to keep kids accountable: (Insert trumpet sounds) Book Response Letters!

My book response letters are templates that students fill in at different points in their reading. There are 3 templates, so students respond when they are 1/3 through, 2/3 through, and finished reading their books. After writing a letter, they exchange them and write back to a classmate's letter using accountable talk stems. Fun fun! I've tested them in my 4th grade classroom, and my students really enjoyed writing them! After the first one, they actually asked when they could write another letter. :)

You could take a grade on these letters, but what I do is put a sticker on my Book Letter Chart each time a student writes a letter (no sticker if the letter isn't filled out properly). After they get 5 stickers (which takes 5 weeks for mine), I let them get a prize (hat day pass, stuffed animal pass, candy, etc.).

Print and go with this download! You don't have to do any prep work. However, I am including a page in the download to explain more about how I use Book Clubs and these letters in my classroom.

You don't have to do Book Clubs in your room to use these letters, by the way. They work for any fictional chapter book that a student is reading. I also developed a set of letters for nonfiction books. Check them out in my store!

Included:
1. Quick Start Guide for Teachers
2. Book Letter 1
3. Book Letter 2
4. Book Letter 3
5. Examples of all 3 Book Letters written by a student
6. List of appropriate Accountable Talk Stems to be used when students write back to a classmate's letter
