Before my students write their own book reviews, we spend some time researching the traits of a good book review. Therefore, my students have something with which to model their own writing.
Rockingham County offers a valuable resource in its English and Language Arts website: Rockingham Reads. This blog consists of book reviews written by the county’s English Coordinator, and it encourages guest bloggers of teachers and students. After my students write their reviews, this blog offers an authentic audience in which my students who achieved highly on this paper can publish their writing.
The website is http://english.rockingham.k12.va.us/rockingham-reads .
My students search through pages of book reviews on this site, seeking out solid examples of hooks, persuasive sentences, conclusions, and books to add to their Someday Lists. This graphic organizer is glued into their Interactive Notebooks so they have this research on which to look back during writing.
