The Common Core State Standards require students to be able to "write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information" by Grade 5. Are you ready? This product guides students through the process of reviewing fiction or non-fiction texts, supporting their opinion with reasons. With 10 unique layouts and 21 total designs, you will be prepared to teach the process of writing a book review to students at a variety of readiness levels. This product is perfect for inclusive classrooms.
The most basic review template is geared toward K-1 students or struggling learners in higher grades. It simply asks students to indicate whether the text was fiction or non-fiction and to list the title, author, and illustrator. Then, it allows students to assign a rating (either stars or smilies), name their favorite character and their favorite part of the book, and check YES or NO to indicate if they would recommend the book to a friend.
More advanced templates ask students to explain the reasoning behind their opinions (e.g., "I liked/didn't like this book because..." or "My favorite part was ____ because..."), guiding them toward mastery of the related Common Core State Standards.
The most advanced templates ask students to write a summary of the book and provide a review in paragraph form. These templates are geared toward advanced elementary students or even middle school students.
This product also includes several templates in varying degrees of "blankness" to allow you to customize the templates for your own needs.
