Arrange 7-8 tables by genre ( I used these genres: fantasy, mystery, science fiction, graphic novels, realistic fiction, horror, and historical fiction) and have about five books per table. Have students sit in groups and choose a book from their assigned table, preview their book of choice, and fill out the information on the Book Speed Dating sheet. Using a timer (3 minutes), have students move to the next table (genre). After all genres have been previewed, make a list of the top three books and why they were interesting. My students moved through each genre station clockwise every three minutes. This rotation worked well and my most reluctant readers enjoyed this activity. It allowed movement and reading! I had my students place this sheet in their binders for future reference when they didn't know what to check out in the library.
