This Book Study is a great first at-home reading assignment to send home with your students. The purpose of each task is to allow you to get to know each of your students as readers while supporting and building independent reading behaviors at home. Students are asked to share about their favorite books, use the Cafe strategy of "I-PICK books" to select appropriate and engaging reading material, log their at-home reading time for two weeks, and then complete one response based on one text they read. What a great way to get a snapshot of each reader's interests and habits right away in the fall!
As always, modeling how to use this activity while explaining your expectations with students will produce higher-quality final products. If you'd like to use this piece as a formative assessment, you will notice that the final task on the back ties directly to CCSS/CCR Anchor Standards RL 3 and RI 3.
To publish this document, print pages 1-2 of the PDF back-to-back (cardstock or heavier weight paper recommended). Be sure to run one test copy in case you need to turn the second page so that the inside of your booklet is facing right side up. Fold in half and you are ready to go!!!
