I give this paper to students when they are preparing to do a book talk. It lists topics or areas I would like students to discuss. It also has a rubric (for students to see exactly how I will grade them) and an area for their name, the grade, and teacher comments. Students must keep this sheet of paper and hand it to me prior to their book talk. I will always have extras on hand, but students will lose five points if they are unprepared.
On the other hand, I never take points off if students forget a question or an area to discuss. I just gently prompt them by asking and as long as they can discuss that area, it is fine. (Students are allowed to bring notes or note-cards to the book talk, but I never collect or ask for formal writing.)
