When my students come to school in September, the expectation is that they read a least 2 books over the summer. One of the ways I get students talking about their summer reading is to write and record a book talk. This also helps me to get to know my students as readers and students.
This resource includes 4 pages of handouts for the students. For the first page, I go through each section with students as a class and allow them to take note or I will give them teacher notes if they need help. The rest of the assignment can be complete independently by students.
I use a website to have students record themselves presenting their book talks, but you can assign students to record at home.
