Independent reading is vital in a child's growth, however, holding students accountable for what they've read can be challenging. My students fill out a Book Talk Summary sheet after each book they have read. This sheet asks for easily identifiable information about the book and requires that they fill out a summary on the book. This sheet can be used in a variety of ways. I have used this sheet for a few years now. They turn in this sheet with their book and we have a book conference. Based on our conference, I can approve these book pages or decline them based on their answers. Each quarter, students are required to read a certain number of pages for a letter grade that contributes to their overall Reading grade.
