Are you looking for a creative way to get your students to try reading something new? Do you need a creative way to invite parents into your classroom or library? Here is everything you need to host your own book tasting event!
When I did this at my school, I advertised a week before parent teacher night. I sent a 1/2 page poster home, and put up posters around the school. Then on the day of the event, I covered the tables with table cloths, plates, and cutlery and had some students volunteer as "wait staff". As they seated people they gave them a menu to read, then took their orders by asking them whether they would like to sample some appetizers (which were picture books), main course (which were non-fiction books) or dessert (which were fiction books). Once they placed their order, the "waiters" brought them a platter with one of each type of genre listen in the menu. After they had a chance to get a "taste" of each of the books, they voted for their favourite one. It was a fantastic evening, parents and students loved it, I got some valuable data about what genres students were most interested in, and students were exposed to some different books they might not have tried otherwise.
This download includes:
1 full page poster to put up around the school to invite students to your book tasting event (blank space left so you can add date, time etc)
1 page -two half page invites to hand out to students
2 pages -A book tasting menu (two pages, inside and outside, when copied will fold vertically to be a menu)
1 page -another version of the inside of the menu with blank spaces to include QR codes -I linked the QR codes to a survey so when students scanned the codes with their phones or ipads, they could vote for their favourite type of genre
1 page -voting page -if you are not using QR codes, students can vote for their favourite genre using this sheet
2 pages of book marks to hand out when students have participated -One says, "Books are like healthy food for your brain" the other says, "Sink your teeth into a good book"
Please if you have any requests, suggestions, or questions, please let me know, I am always willing to make changes or adjustments based on your needs!
Thanks so much!
