Ok it’s the end of your novel unit and you’re faced with a choice on summative assessment: test or project? It can be a difficult choice to make. So difficult for me in fact that I decided I would do both! I wanted my students to show their comprehension and creativity through book projects, but I also wanted to test reading comprehension and application. As a result, I made book tests for the novels that my students read.
This is a 35-point summative assessment for that I used for seventh graders. Sections include the following: 1) matching characters and quotations; 2) short answer questions related to POV, setting, plot points; 3) identifying/explaining literary devices in the text; 4) two essay questions of which students select one to complete. There is also a book vocabulary bonus section. An answer key and essay grading sheet is also included.
