About This Book

Funny Bones tells the story of how the amusing skeletons performing various everyday or festive activities known as calaveras came to be. Calaveras are the creation of Mexican artist José Guadalupe (Lupe) Posada (1852–1913). Posada first drew political cartoons that amused the local populations but not the politicians. Mexico was not known for its freedom of speech.

He is best known today for his calavera drawings although he continued to draw cartoons throughout much of his life. These cartoons have become associated with Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival. Duncan Tonatiuh brings to light the remarkable life and work of a man whose art is beloved by many but whose name has remained in obscurity. He mixes his work with the work of Posada. Included in the back matter of the book are an author’s note, bibliography, glossary, and index.

About This Product

These activities can be used for individual, small group, for whole class. They could also be used as homework, with guided groups, or with book groups. Small groups could be working on different activities at the same time. The book can be read aloud and selected activities done in class. They could be useful laminated and in a literacy center. It is always a better learning experience if books are discussed in pairs or in groups, in my opinion. Pairs or groups of students can also complete more complex activities.

Students can travel around the classroom to 3 or 4 stations answering questions about the book. The questions can be glued to butcher paper. Each station should have enough squares for all of the class to record their answer. The questions or activities can be posted on the paper or on the wall. Students must support their answers with proof from the book.
