I designed these bookmarks to encourage active and engaged reading through contextual vocabulary study. Students will use their vocabulary books to record up to 20 challenging, interesting, and new words that they encounter as they read any work. Upon completion, students will use their bookmark vocabulary word list to place the word in context, define it, identify the part of speech, and create a contextual question and answer related to the word. Because students will be connecting the words to new contexts, they will using higher-order thinking skills, skills that often are left out of traditional vocabulary study. I also included Color Me bookmarks because my students love coloring for stress relief. Being student-led, this vocabulary study pairs well with student-led word walls.
