Bookopoly is a game designed to encourage students to read independently throughout the school year! I've heard students complain too often about how many books they are supposed to read during the year, and Bookopoly is the solution to this problem! A parody of Monopoly, Bookopoly is a cooperative classroom game that energizes your Independent Reading program. As teachers, we know reading is a joyful, inspiring, and challenging adventure, and Bookopoly taps into that to make a memorable experience for the students.
In this game, students will each have a game piece to mark their spot on the board. They will roll the dice, and will move their piece forward. If they land on a property, they have to follow the directions on that piece. For example, they might be asked to read a book that won a Newberry Award or a book in the genre of Science Fiction. If they land on Chance, they will have the choice to complete a writing assignment (Argumentative, Informative, or Narrative) or move back 3 spaces. If they land on Community Challenge, students will complete a project designed to improve their community, with a special emphasis on Speaking and Listening skills.
Once students have finished reading their book, they will fill out a Book Review, earn the cash prize, and roll again. This game is designed to be cooperative, so that the class is working together to earn money towards a whole class prize, such as a Popcorn Party or HW Pass. You could also adjust the game to make the prizes based on individual contributions!
