My name is Miriam Lerman, and I am an undergraduate student at Nova Southeastern University studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. As a part of my Honors in Major Project, my advisor, Dr. Jacqueline Hinckley, and I decided to create a project that would benefit children in their education of speech, hearing, and other related disorders through the medium of books. When I was in elementary school, a few of my classmates had speech, hearing, or other related disorders. The teachers and therapists at my school only taught us the science behind their disorders, but they never taught us about how the disorder affects our classmates or what we can do to help them succeed. I believe that if I had been introduced to these disorders through a more approachable medium, such as children’s books, I would have had a better understanding of what a stutter or hearing impairment was. I compiled a list of books and activities that I believe would be helpful for children in learning about and understanding different speech, language, and hearing disorders.
