Introduces 17 graphic novels/series that are ideal for middle school students. Each slide includes the book title, cover image, and a short summary or facts about the book. For this lesson, I put all the books on the library tables for students to browse as I talk about each book.
The first slide ("Migrant Mother" photograph from 1936) is to introduce art as a way to tell a story. I will ask students what they see in this photo, what they think is going on, what emotions are present, and how they know all this. We will discuss how in graphic novels, "reading" the art is just as important--if not more important--than reading the words.
