It can be difficult to get our students to try reading outside of their comfort zone. This resource is meant to encourage students to try a new category of book or genre, and perhaps find something they like and will continue to read.
Students are asked to read books from 5 different categories. When finished with a book, there is a short page for them to complete to “show off” what they have read about. These pages vary in style and include drawing, writing, and speaking.
As a bonus, upon completion I like to reward students with a small baggie of gummy worms for them to enjoy during their next independent reading time.
Bookworm Challenge One includes:
Read a book …
that is part of a series
with an animal as the main character
that is a graphic novel
that has 100+ pages
that is considered non-fiction
Also available at my store, Mindful and Intentional Teaching is …
Bookworm Challenge Two with 5 more reading categories and reporting out pages.
Genre Bingo, a free resource to encourage students to try different genre.
