Description

This "About Me" Bookworm is the perfect project to promote and celebrate reading in your classroom! It connects the individual with the group using tessellations and has a ton of “wow factor” when complete.

This project has an option for an “about me” bookworm that can be used on its own (just the three pages) or combined with the reading tracker/reading log, book review, and/or book report pages.

As your students read, their bookworms will grow—motivating them to keep reading while serving as creative, visual inspiration to your students. The final display will be a stunning bulletin board display that celebrates reading!

It's fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher. The many ways you could use this project are endless, and I hope you and your students have as much fun with this as my students did!

INCLUDED

  • Tessellation handout: For this activity, I have designed a book shape that will tessellate. I have included a handout about tessellations. Please note that the face and tail of the bookworm will not tessellate, only the books.
  • Instructions: I have provided detailed instructions, with photographs, for each part of this resource.
  • Printable Pages: I have put all the printable pages in one section to make printing easier.
  • About Me Activity (details below)
  • Reading Tracker / Reading Log (details below)
  • Book Review (details below)
  • Book Report (details below

OPTIONS

There are four primary options for this activity. However, the various activities can be combined and used together to customize in many different ways.

I have also included a blank tessellation piece to make customizing even easier. Please use what works for you and your students.

Option #1: About Me Activity: Students will create an “about me” bookworm. Each bookworm will include a face, an about me book, and a tail.

On the “about me” book page, students will write about themselves, including what grade they are in, how old they are, and what kind of books they like to read.

The about me bookworm can be created all on its own (just the three pieces) or combined with any other book options in this resource to have a growing bookworm. The possibilities are endless!

Option #2: Reading Tracker/Reading Log: Students can add a “reading log” page, for each book they read, to the “about me” bookworm (previous activity).

The design of the book is a tessellation piece. Therefore, if you’d like to use this reading tracker option without the bookworm face and tail, you can easily do that. To do this, students will fill out a “reading tracker” page for each book they read, and then the books can be attached in a column. They will fit together with their classmates on top, bottom, right and left.

Option #3: Book Review: Students can add a “book review” page, for each book they read, to the “about me” bookworm (see first activity).

The design of the book is a tessellation piece. Therefore, if you’d like to use this book review option without the bookworm face and tail, you can easily do that. To do this, students will fill out a “book review” page for each book they read, and then the books can be attached in a column. They will fit together with their classmates on top, bottom, right and left.

Option #4: Book Report: Students can add a “book report” page, for each book they read, to the “about me” bookworm (see first activity).

The design of the book is a tessellation piece. Therefore, if you’d like to use this book report option without the bookworm face and tail, you can easily do that. To do this, students will fill out a “book report” page for each book they read, and then the books can be attached in a column. They will fit together with their classmates on top, bottom, right and left.

BANNERS

I have included four banner options. If you’d like, use one with your students to display along with the final bookworms.

The banners say…

  • “WE LOVE TO READ”
  • “PROUD TO BE BOOKWORMS”
  • “BOOKS WE HAVE READ”
  • “OUR READING LOG”

Endless Creativity!

While I have used this lesson with my students and tried to include as many creative options as possible, there is always room for a little more creativity! Nobody will bring creativity to the table the way our students will—they are amazing! For example, one of my students made a little top hat for her bookworm to wear. How cute was that? I hope this lesson will support your students and their creative ideas!

…and because I know how creative you are, I have included a blank tessellation piece, allowing you to customize this lesson even further if you wish. If not, use what I have designed and let your students do the rest!

Time: The time it takes to do this project will depend on the age of your students and the options you decide to utilize in this resource. Pieces 1, 2, and 3 of the “about me” bookworm will take approximately 45 min to 1 hour (option #1). Each additional book for the “book report” option will take about 45-60 minutes (not including time to read and depending on the age of your students).
