Students will test to see if different waters affect crystal growth. Students will create a supersaturated solution. They will discover that distilled water is a pure substance and other types of water may not be. In the investigation the students will create a hypothesis. They will record data, calculate the mean and graph. Students will be guided on how to write a summary and conclusion.
Teachers will love the step by step directions and journal layout. Students will enjoy seeing the crystals form. This is a great activity for science fairs, classrooms, clubs, or science camps. I used this to help my students prepare for the You Be the Chemist Challenge. All supplies can be found at the grocery store.
This investigation is also available for different grade levels. The 2nd/3rd Grade investigation tests different waters, but is written in an age appropriate way for that grade level. The 6th-8th grade version expands to an if, then, because hypothesis, 4 waters to test, and 3 trials. You can purchase them individually or the bundle for a discount.
