Description

If you need an engaging challenge (with some math and science thrown in) this is the perfect Quick Challenge for you! Your students will love flipping the bottles and recording their results. You will love how easy this challenge is to prepare!

Note: This quick challenge is available as part of money-saving bundles:

What is the challenge?

Students toss bottles, record their landings, calculate the fractional result, convert to percentages, and determine which size bottle and how much water works the best. After tossing four sizes of bottles students advance to the design challenge. Can they use their data to choose the right bottle to fill with something other than a liquid?

What is your prep?

Materials needed for the experiment are four sizes of empty bottles, water, measuring cups, and towels. The design portion of this resource uses a variety of items (like marbles, beans, rice). The teacher’s guide lists many items you can try, but you can also try anything you have in your classroom – if it fits in the bottle. Don’t purchase anything- just use what you have!

The package specifically contains:

  • Cover sheet
  • Teacher Overview
  • 6 pages of Teacher Direction,
  • Lab Sheet in two versions (one for pairs of students and one for teams of four students)
  • 1 page of photos
  • Scoring rubric
  • Terms of Use
  • All forms are provided in an editable format!

The Teacher’s Guide includes images with step-by-step procedures to make this as simple as possible for you.

Your students will love tossing those bottles and then designing their own experiment to extend the activity!

Save money and grab the bundle of Quick Challenges!
