Measurement is an excellent way to teach the scientific method and metric system in a back-to-school science unit for elementary and middle school students. Students love this bouncing, hands-on activity that teaches independent and dependent variables. There are actually three different versions of the activity presented in this resource. (1) What height will a ball bounce to? (2) How many bounces? (3) Drop the same ball from increasing heights.

For each of the three versions, there are two data tables provided to record the results of the activity. This allows you to differentiate the activity. There is a lot of integrated math in this activity: measuring, averaging, and graphing. Older students can even calculate the ratios of bounce height vs. drop height and observe if this ratio is consistent at all drop heights. Graph paper is provided.
