If you are studying energy and Newton's laws this is a great hands on science activity. Every year before the holiday break I take my students to the local bowling alley and we conduct this investigation. My 8th grade students love this activity. We bowl the first game for "business" to complete our work, and then bowl the next game for fun. This investigation lends itself to great measurement practice, data analysis, student reflection, and hands on physics instruction.
Below you will find the learning targets associated with this lab:
-I can describe potential and kinetic energy and use the correct formula to find them both.
-I can use examples to explain how energy can be converted from one form to another.
-I can graphically represent investigation results and analyze them.
-I can find the force of an object and label it correctly.
-I can find the acceleration of an object and label it correctly.
-I can explain how Newton’s three laws apply to bowling.
