Box Plots can be really confusing for students. This investigation allows students to create their very own box plot in a fun, interactive, kinesthetic, non-intimidating way. Students will be asked to survey the students in their class and organize it to allow for easy graphing on the next page. Using scissors they will cut out their organized data set and manipulate the paper to easily find the median and quartiles of their data prior to graphing. The detailed step-by-step instructions make this investigation self-guided and attainable for all students. By the end of the activity your students will have a box plot they created, all on their own, which can then be used to learn about the various components and ultimate purpose of such a graph.
This investigation is set up to organize your students' work/thinking and allow them to thoughtfully share data with their peers. A sample key is provided as a reference and may be used by students to help them with their own creations.
