The Boxcar Children Literature Packet is the perfect way to guide small groups of 2nd or 3rd graders through this classic book. In this newly revised packet (1-23-14) you'll find:
-Meeting and Discussion guide set up to cover the book in 5 meetings which can cover 3 to 5 weeks, depending on meeting frequency. The first meeting is to get acquainted with the book and look over the assignment to discuss the first set of chapters.
Meetings 2,3, 4, and 5 include a discussion guide, students sharing Thinking Notes and questions from their Question Tree. Students discuss 3 vocabulary words from their Know No activity.
There is also a Comprehension Check for each set of chapters. The Comprehension Check has a Word Splash where the students write 3 sentences about important events using words from the book. Then there are 3 questions to answer.
Meeting and Planning Guide
Thinking Note Organize to hold sticky notes
Question Tree for surface and below the surface questions
Vocabulary List and 2 versions of the Vocabulary Know No activity
Comprehension Check for each set of chapters
Set A chapters I - IV
Set B chapters V - VII
Set C chapters VIII - X
Set D chapters XI - XIII
Directions and pintables for putting together Literature Folders.
Also included is a project students can complete after finishing the literature study. The project is a menu where students choose 3 different items (appetizer, main course and dessert). The appetizer items focus on the setting, the main course items focus on the plot or whole book and the dessert items focus on the characters. The items on Literature Menu are not specific to The Boxcar Children and can be used with any book. So if you have small groups reading several different books they can all complete this project.
Scoring Guide for the book project was added to this packet on March 1, 2014.
