Description
Do your students forget the definitions of their vocabulary words after taking the quiz? Do you want them to learn their vocabulary words well enough to use them in their speaking and writing? I have a secret sauce.
These vocabulary exercises, which are compatible with any Tier 2 word list - are the third installment in a series of brain-based, differentiated approaches that appeal to various learning styles. By getting students to think about their words through unique and creative angles, you'll notice a sharp increase in retention.
Three different engaging vocabulary activities are included in this resource:
1. a continuum: Students can use the continuum in different ways to reflect upon their understanding of the word. This exercise also includes a choice board and flexible, easy-to-grade rubric to help students zero in on the words they struggle with most.
2. a game: In small groups, students will engage in meaningful vocabulary conversation and practice using words from any list. This activity features a game board with twenty different tasks for students to complete. A score-keeping sheet and number cards are provided. You will need to type up your own vocabulary words to use with the game.
3. a speed dating activity: High school students will love participating in a mock speed dating event that requires them to "be" their vocabulary word. Critical thinking is required, and suggestions for differentiating for various levels of learners are included.
These engaging brain-based vocabulary activities work well at any stage of a vocabulary unit, but they are especially helpful as review activities before quizzes and tests.
Enjoy, and please leave feedback regarding the ways these worked for you!
