STEAM and STEM-based classrooms recognize the importance of creativity and of flexible thinking and inquiry! Because of that, I am so excited to share the children of W.A.T.T. Valley with you!!!
This brand new series has been years in development, and the characters you will meet in W.A.T.T. Valley have been thoughtfully designed to provide your students with inspiration and encouragement!
This W.A.T.T. resource pack centers on the adventures of both Think-About-It Tucker and Word Play W.P. These are excellent resources for use in collaboration with other W.A.T.T. Valley learning materials, however they are also excellent stand-alone elements for encouraging your students to develop important critical thinking and problem-solving skills, applicable in both classroom and real-world settings.
Word Play W.P. loves to play games with words and vocabulary. In this resource pack, students will experiment with word games, box puzzles, and Stretchy 7’s. Word games vary lesson to lesson and are meant to expand students’ understanding of and joy in working with words. Box puzzles, sometimes referred to as plexers, are solved by considering where and why words are written in relation to the box they are in. Students will learn to use the box itself as a tool in solving the puzzle, along with the words or phrases inside. The Stretchy 7 word puzzles are meant to teach your students to think divergently. My students often complete these W.P. activities in a group or with a partner. I often use these as a brain warm-up, as our day or week is beginning.
Think-About-It Tucker loves to ponder the answers to thought-provoking questions. These questions are meant to help students look at solutions in new and different ways, and I try to encourage students to really think in creative ways in solving the questions he poses. My goal is to encourage students to be fearless in creating hypotheses and generating valid conclusions.
I hope you find these materials beneficial in your classroom! Enjoy encouraging your students to love mental word play and brainstorming! Shannon
Additional Note: I also often photocopy Danny’s Daydreams onto the back of “W.A.T.T. Valley Mind Stretches with WP and Tucker” for a complete Morning Mind Stretch Workout using both creative and critical thinking skills. See the “W.A.T.T. Valley Daydream Drawings and Doodles” resource pack with Daydream Danny which is also available for purchase.
