Product Description
As a teacher do you find it challenging to intertwine Common Core Standards into day to day lessons? Well then Brain Crackers is the tool for you. Brain Crackers are 30 weekly worksheets that promote higher-level, analytical thinking in students. They include a prepositional wuzzle (word puzzle), math problems, analogies, sequencing, triples and Latin/Greek stems and affixes. They are designed to meet fourth grade Common Core Standards but they can be used for gifted 3rd graders or 5th graders as well.

Wuzzles are especially designed for visual-spatial learners. Not only do students have to decipher what the wuzzle is saying, they have to circle the preposition in the answer.

The Common Core Standards they align with are:
4-4.A Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase
4.G.I Identify preposition
4.X.6 Identify the meaning of idioms and adages sets 1 and 2

The Math section is made up three problems, except for when it involves words problems. All problems address one specific Common Core Standard. They get progressively harder.

They align with so many Common Core Standards there are too many to list.

The Analogy Section reinforces figurative language skills such as synonyms, antonyms, metaphors, idioms, and comparing and contrasting information.

The Common Core Standards they align with are:
4-Q.3 Find synonyms in context
4-Q.6 Find antonyms in context
4-W.2 Compare in informational text
4-X.7 Identify similes and metaphors
4-X.9 Determine the meaning of similes and metaphors

The Sequence section stimulates higher-level and analytical thinking to complete sequences and identify the rule the pattern follows.

The Common Core Standards they align with are:
4-L.2 Complete a repeating pattern
4-L.5 Complete an increasing number pattern
4-L.7 Use a rule to complete a number pattern
4-L.9 Number patterns: mixed review

The Triples section causes students to make the connections between three words using critical thinking and previous knowledge.

The Common Core Standard they align with is:
4-R.3 Use context to identify the meaning of words (and connections)

The Latin and Greek Stems and Affixes section teaches students the origins of many English words. Knowing the meaning of Latin and Greek stems and affixes strengthens their spelling, reading, writing, defining and dictionary skills.

The Common Core Standards that align with are:

4-O.4 Determine the meaning of Greek and Latin Roots
4-O.5 Determine the meaning of words with Greek and Latin roots
4-N.1 Identify base words, prefixes and suffixes
4-N.4 Identify the meaning of a word with pre, re, or mis
4-P.6 Use dictionary entries
4-P.7 Use dictionary definitions

Brain Crackers can be used once a week, chunked into parts or done for homework. There is a student evaluation component which allows students to put a happy face next to the problem they liked the most or found easiest to do. This allows you as the teacher to do a quick self assessment of the students' abilities and strengths. They are a great substitute tool as well. I hope this helps to understand what Brain Crackers are all about.
