Brain break: a brief change of pace during class that often allows students some physical movement as well as a diversion from class instruction. For Chinese classes, I like to use brain breaks that maintain a Chinese theme whenever possible. I developed this list and the chart so that I didn't need to think up new brain breaks each day of class. The teacher needs a little break, too!
This document has over 30 ideas for short brain breaks during Chinese language classes, with description of each activity. A chart that may be shown to students invites them to roll dice to determine which brain break to do. Or, teachers can choose an activity based on their resources and knowledge of the class.
Many ideas included would apply to other world languages, too.
I used these brain breaks on a regular basis when teaching Chinese to 4th through 8th graders, and use them to some degree with high school students whom I now teach.
