This packet is to be used before students start writing their suspense stories. This writing assignment is the culminating assessment in a unit of learning about and analyzing elements of fiction and suspense (in particular, foreshadowing, dramatic irony, types of narrators, etc.). There are three separate brainstorming pages in this packet: (1) a page to help them include the required elements of fiction and suspense, (2) a protagonist brainstorm page, and (3) a page to start writing a draft. Students sign up to conference with me when they finish their packets. This helps me check in to make sure they know what they are doing before they start typing. When handing out the assignment, I spend some time talking through the packet with the class; students then work individually so that I have time to conference.
Included is a pdf as well as an editable version.
(My free product "Rubric for Suspense Story" goes along with this assignment.)
