This is an activity that aims to have students brainstorm and write before a verbal debate. It can be used with almost any story, book, or opinion debate. It is a great activity for reluctant debaters, debaters who have trouble staying on topic, or debaters who need to slow down and use more logic in their reasoning.
The main steps of the activity are: student brainstorm, class brainstorm, student writing, class debate, student debrief. It includes a teacher example/explanation (p.1-6) and a student copy for you to fill in the opinions for your debate (p.7-11). I've listed possible modifications (challenge and simplification) as well.
