This test is designed as an accompanying assessment to the analysis questions I wrote Brave New World. The questions are imitative of the AP Literature exam in regards to the language used in their phrasal, as well as the inclusion of variations on traditional multiple-choice questions such as “all of the above except” or “both a and b” to simulate choosing not necessarily the only correct answer, but the best answer in a list of somewhat comparable choices.
While the test could be used without the accompanying analysis study guides, students may find some of the particular nature of the questions difficult without being prompted to do the close analytical reading facilitated by the study guides. One of the goals of writing such a test (aside from always promoting AP exam readiness) is to require students to do the work I’ve assigned and actually read the novel, rather than using one of the dozens of Internet shortcuts available to students today (i.e. SparkNotes).
I have been teaching AP Lit. for 9 years using these materials and have been running a very successful program (there are no prerequisites to take the class, and typically I have pushed 50 or more kids per year with varying backgrounds to meet or exceed the national passing rates). I have a Masters in Creative Writing, and thought I would make some of my materials available for purchase.
If you end up applying this in your classroom, please provide feedback as to the challenge level, student response, etc. My name is Adam Horowitz, and I'm a sixteen year educator. You can e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Finally, consider looking into the complete novel package. It includes all background materials, four quizzes, over 100+ analysis questions and the test. Check out the description for more info.
If you’re tired of students simply SparkNoting through literature, consider giving my materials a try.
