PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Knead a hands-on activity that teaches a lot of science? Students love to “knead the dough” in this inquiry activity that addresses the question: what happens to the mass of dough as yeast start to grow and make the dough rise? A little bit of kitchen science will interest students and you don’t even need an oven for this activity as the dough will be left overnight at room temperature.

There certainly is a lot of science in bread-making: chemical changes, production of carbon dioxide, yeast growth, measurement, and the conservation of mass. The complete procedure for the experiment is presented and all the science behind the activity is described. The materials, procedure, and result tables are provided for students to incorporate into their lab notebooks.

A Venn diagram with answer key that compares baking bread to spoiling food (yeasts and molds) is included as is a graphic organizer worksheet on the activity. Either could be offered as a homework assignment or given to students who finish the activity early.
