"Bread on the Water" is a short story by David Lubar included in Destination Unexpected, a 2006 anthology compiled by Donald R. Gallo (available on Amazon Prime).
I've used this story with 6th grade students as a beginning-of-the-year look at realistic fiction and determining theme. It begins with two boys - friends with different family backgrounds - getting kicked out of a church service, and it follows their interactions with a waitress and a homeless man before they make their way back in time for lunch.
