The Break/Remake Sheets are reproducible. They are perfect for whole classroom use, as well as small groups and centers. The Break/Remake Sheets are designed to help your students practice crucial blending and segmenting skills as they master frequently used word families. They will be using highlighters to aid in the visual distinction between onset and rhyme. There are three sets. Each set contains a sample cover sheet (which corresponds with the first worksheet page in the set, and models the completed sheet.) Next is the instruction page, and then the terminology page which provides onset/rhyme terminology your students can use and understand for each of the columns on the Break/Remake Sheets. The onsets and word families are broken up into sections on the sheets. Students must focus on all of the letters up to the vowel before writing the onset in the correct column. The terminology page also includes onset/rhyme hand and arm movements for memory. The terminology page is followed by the student worksheets. Students will “break” (segment) the words to isolate the onset (all of the letters before the vowel) and the word family (the vowel and all of the letters after). Then they will “remake” the word by blending the onset and word family. Twelve words are provided for each lesson.
