The Break the Code unit is designed for adolescent readers and writers who may benefit from targeted instruction to learn the "code" of English words and sounds. This unit applies best practice in explicit and systematic instruction in word and sound work with lots of feedback and guided practice. The students receive direct instruction on the skills until they demonstrate mastery in at least three instructional settings and then continue to review the skills to support that the students truly own these new skills to support independent transfer in their own reading and writing. Students also apply the word work in real reading work with teacher guidance and feedback. This targeted reading intervention approach might be appropriate for students who have a reading or learning disability or students who are learning English as a new language in their academic center. This unit is designed to be taught in an individual or small group setting with an intervention design of instruction and mastery.
