Breaking Barriers: Learning Disabilities Research

Did you know that learning disabilities are not the same as intellectual disabilities? Most people that are learning disabled also have an average or above average intelligence. Many people are able to overcome learning disabilities and successfully accomplish outstanding achievements! In fact, there are numerous celebrities, famous athletes, entrepreneurs, and real teens that have learning disabilities who are able to thrive!

Provide your students with a meaningful opportunity to learn more about learning disabilities, teach them the importance of compassion, and empower them with the knowledge that having a learning disability does not prevent one's ABILITY to achieve.

A pre-search song activity using Rachel Platten’s Fight Song video and lyrics;

Student handout analyzing the message presented within the lyrics in Fight Song and analyzing how the lyrics relate to the obstacles experienced by people with learning disabilities;

Links to research studies, facts, and statistics about learning disabilities;

Over 72 bookmarked links embedded into the Breaking Barriers site featuring celebrities, athletes, entrepreneurs, and real life teens who have various learning disabilities;

Research questions to help structure and guide students during their research;

A digital note-taking handout;

A Google Slides research-based project featuring relevant facts about learning disabilities along with examples of the specific people students chose to research;

An editable Google Slides research-based presentation grading rubric;

A research reflection student handout;

A detailed teacher’s guide for implementation.
