This is the "Breaking Free!" Advanced Ceramics Project meant for high school second-year ceramics students. This project works best with students who have had a year or more of hand-building experience prior to attempting this project. Warning-It is not a beginning project! : )
The final product is a pinch sphere with animals/creatures/plants/etc breaking free or trying to seek refuge within the sphere. It involves manipulating the surface of the sphere, even cutting into it if necessary, in order to allow the animals to crawl into/escape from the sphere "environment". This is a fantastic project for getting students to think about interior/exterior and positive/negative spaces as well as texture and in-the-round-thinking.
Handouts included in this packet are: Project Description (.docx), Idea Drawings (.jpg), Sketch Page (.jpg), Sphere Template (.jpg), Cube Template (.jpg) Quick Start Guide (.jpg), Rubric (.docx), Sample Display Description (.pdf), teacher-example photographs showing a "breaking through" effect, 8 Student Examples PPT Slideshow (.pptx).
This project assumes the teacher has access to ceramics tools, clay, kiln, and a basic understanding of clay.
Materials needed are clay, slip (clay and water mixture), a needle tool (a fork works well), a plastic knife for cutting clay, modeling/sculpting tools (various utensils can be used), brushes, glaze or paint.
